Saraswati Puja is a spring based celebration in India, where on the day of Vasant Panchami, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped. Saraswati symbolizes creative energy and is considered the goddess of knowledge, music, art, wisdom, and learning.

She is known as the Goddess of speech and a part of the Tridevi, which includes Lakshmi and Parvati. In many regions of India, the day of Saraswati Puja is considered very auspicious for children aged 4 years and above. On this day, they are encouraged to write their first words with their fingers/ pencil/ pen and study a creative field.

The day is also celebrated for agricultural fields ripening with yellow mustard crops and flowers. The people celebrate it by wearing yellow clothes, decorating homes and Saraswati idols with yellow flowers, and eating yellow rice and sweets as a part of a grandiose feast.

The color yellow is fortunate for both being the favorite color of Goddess Saraswati and because the agriculture fields glow yellow after the mustard flowers bloom. Any creative work is started on this day as it is considered very fortunate for students and creative people to enhance their learning by worshipping Goddess Saraswati.

On this day, people offer yellow clothes to the idol or statue of Goddess Saraswati. After that roli, saffron, sandalwood, turmeric, yellow and white flowers, yellow sweets and akshat are offered to the Goddess. Musical instruments, books, writings and paintings are then placed near the Goddess’ feet to gain her blessings and her mantras are recited to offer the prayers.

Legend Behind the Saraswati Puja

At the time of world creation, God Brahma had created living beings and human beings after getting God Vishnu’s permission. However, after the creation was completed, Brahma was not satisfied as there was something missing. There was an atmosphere of peace all around due to that.

To remedy this, Brahma sprinkled a few drops from his kamandal (pot). When the drops landed on the soil, the earth began to vibrate. A goddess then appeared from among the trees, with 4 hands holding a Veena, a boar, a book and a garland of pearls. Seeing her, Brahma asked her to play the Veena.

As soon as the Goddess started playing her Veena, all the creatures of the world developed the ability to make sounds and humans could speak. Seas began to roar, winds rustled through the trees, and the sky crackled in thunder. Seeing this, Brahma called her the Goddess of Speech, Saraswati.
