Pausha Putrada Ekadasi

It is a wonderful feeling to have a tiny little angel at home who responds to your talks with coos and gurgles. Some couples have experienced this beautiful phase of their lives while a few are still awaiting this sweet blessing.

What is Putrada Ekadasi?

The special Ekadasi known as “Putrada Ekadasi” is for the couples belonging to both the stages (couples aspiring for children and the couples who are already blessed with children) of their lives. It blesses aspiring parents with good children and the couples who are parents receive special blessings for their children. It is significant to note that Putrada Ekadasi also bestows knowledge, wealth and fame in the society. Thus, this Ekadasi is for couples and others alike. Putrada Ekadasi unlike other Ekadasis is celebrated twice in a year, once in the month of Shravana (July-August) and once in the month of Pausha (December-January). The latter is famous in North India while the former has gained more prominence in South India.

“Pun-nāmno narakād yasmāt trāyate iti putra”

Adi Parva (Sloka 38 from Chapter 74) of Mahabharata states that there is a hell called Pum/Put. The one who delivers the parents and ancestors from this hell is called as “putra”.

Story behind Putrada Ekadasi:

Suketuman, the king of Bhadravati and his queen Shaibya were grief-stricken due to the lack of offspring. They were bothered as there would be no one to perform their last rites (shraddha). Suketuman was anguished and left to the forest leaving behind the kingdom. After a few days, he came across a spiritual hermitage on the banks of the river Manasarovar. Fortunately, that day happened to be the auspicious Putrada Ekadasi. Upon hearing to the king's misery, the sages in the hermitage advised him to faithfully observe the Putrada Ekadasi vrata to be blessed with a child. Suketuman returned to his kingdom and observed the Putrada Ekadasi vrata along with his wife. By the mercy of Lord Vishnu, the couple was shortly blessed with a son who grew up to become a meritorious king.

Significance of the observance of the Pausha Putrada Ekadasi:

In Bhavishyottara Purana, Lord Krishna thus describes the glories of Putrada Ekadasi to king Yudhishtira. Putrada Ekadasi blesses one with pious children, relieves one from sins and makes one famous and learned.
