Education, knowledge and wisdom in all their wondrous forms have received a lot of awe and reverence throughout the ages, civilizations, cultures and continents. India in particular is a land where we respect and worship books, pens and all kinds of reading and writing material. Then, one wouldn't be in a dismay to realize that a specific goddess is worshipped for knowledge and wisdom.
Goddess Saraswati is the presiding deity of education, wisdom and knowledge. She is the goddess of learning, arts, science, literature and music. In the form of Vaagdevi, she is the goddess of sound and speech. She is worshipped not only for the material or academic knowledge but also for the spiritual knowledge. The two words “sara” and “swa” stand for “essence” and “self” respectively. Thus implying that goddess Saraswati provides the essence of the self. She imparts knowledge and guides her devotees in the path of self-realization, enlightenment and paves the way for liberation.
The following mantra can be chanted to worship goddess Saraswati and to receive her divine blessings in the path of knowledge and truth.
“May Goddess Saraswati, who is fair like the jasmine-colored moon, whose pure white garland is like frosty dew drops, who is adorned in radiant white attire, on whose beautiful arm rests the veena, whose throne is a white lotus, who is surrounded and respected by the gods, protect me. May you fully remove my lethargy, sluggishness and ignorance.”
Saraswati Gayatri mantra:
The following is the Saraswati Gayatri mantra suitable for recitation by the people who are initiated by a guru into chanting of the Gayatri mantra:
“Let me meditate on the goddess of speech. May the wife of Lord Brahma give me higher intellect. And let Goddess Vani illuminate my mind.”
It is important to note that any mantra recitation generates immense energy and the same needs to be returned to the universe in the form of tarpan or in the form of blessings to the near and dear. The reciter can give away the energy to the universe through tarpan by reciting “tatsa brahmarpana mastu” at the end of the mantra recitation. One can also distribute the energy through rays by blessing the near and dear. Whenever the energy tarpan is performed to the universe, one receives blessings from the universe.
Appropriate way to worship Goddess Saraswati:
• It is believed that goddess Saraswati is very fond of the colors white and yellow. Hence, she can be easily worshipped at home in a picture or deity form by offering white and yellow flowers.
• It is wonderful to offer incense made out of almond, lavender, rosemary or cinnamon to please her.
• A simple prayer and an offering of a lamp, white/yellow flowers, incense and fruits (especially berries) or sweets can make for a nice worship at home for goddess Saraswati.
