Mohini Ekadasi

The glories of the Ekadasi that occurs during the Shukla paksha (waxing phase of the moon) of the Vaisakha month are mentioned in the Kurma Purana as a narration by Lord Krishna to king Yudhishtira. This Ekadasi is named as Mohini Ekadasi.

Earlier, the glories of Mohini Ekadasi were narrated by sage Vashistha to Lord Rama.

Glories of Mohini Ekadasi:

The city of Bhadravati which was on the banks of river Sarasvati was once ruled by king Dyutiman. In the same city there was a very rich and pious merchant named Dhanapal who contributed a lot for the welfare of the people around him. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. He had five sons and one among them was Dhrishthabuddhi.

Dhrishthabuddhi was very immoral and engaged in various abominable activities. He misused his father's wealth and lead a very sinful life. Deeply disturbed and hurt by Dhrishthabuddhi's behavior, his father rejected his entry into the house. Dhrishthabuddhi wandered on the streets and was tormented by hunger and anxiety. He began to steal to pacify his hunger and as a result was thrown out of the kingdom of Dyutiman. Dhrishthabuddhi found his way into deep forests and started killing animals for his survival. In this way, he continued to live an extremely sinful life.

Due to some past good fortune, one day Dhrishthabuddhi came across the hermitage of Kaundinya Muni. Dhrishtabuddhi happened to touch the droplets of water dripping from the clothes of Kaundinya Muni who just took a bath in the Ganges river and thus, Dhrishthabuddhi was freed from his ignorance. Dhrishthabuddhi requested the sage to advice him of a way to get rid of his sins. The sage advised Dhrishthabuddhi to observe a fast on Mohini Ekadasi to be freed from his sins. Dhrishthabuddhi obliged and was freed from his sins and was granted liberation later on due to the faithful observance of Mohini Ekadasi vrat.

Significance of the observance of Mohini Ekadasi vrat:

• Gives freedom to the soul from illusion.
• Relieves the faithful observer of the greatest miseries and suffering.
• Nullifies sins as huge as the Mount Sumeru.
• Even the mere recital or hearing of the glories of Mohini Ekadasi bestows the merit of donating one thousand cows in charity.
