Abhishekam to Shani Dev this Amavasya

Amavasya (New Moon or No Moon day) falls on 22nd November. This Amavasya is also known as Shani Amavasya or Shanishchari Amavasya. On this day, people offer Tel Abhishekam and perform Shani shanti puja to lessen the malefic effects of Shani Saadesaati and Shani Dasha. It is believed that people would overcome mental disturbances, become prosperous and regain their health and vitality by praying to Shani Dev on this day.

Story Behind the Offering of Mustard Oil to Shani Dev:

Legend has it that Shani Dev happened to pass by Lord Hanuman when He was praying to Lord Ram near Ram Setu at sunset. Hanumanji did not notice Shani Dev as He was totally lost in prayers. An infuriated Shani Dev challenged Lord Hanuman to a duel. At first, Lord Hanuman declined Shani Dev’s challenge as He was engrossed in prayers. An adamant Shani Dev held Lord Hanuman’s hand and challenged Him again. Lord Hanuman then wrapped His tail around Shani Dev and started rubbing it against the walls of Ram Setu. Shani Dev cried out in pain and begged to be freed. After getting freed, Shani Dev requested Hanumanji for mustard oil to relieve His pains. Hanumanji offered mustard oil and took an oath from Shani Dev that He would not disturb Sri Ram’s devotees. Hence, devotees offer mustard oil to Shani Dev to please Him.
