Story Behind the Birth of Lord Hanuman

The story behind the birth of Lord Hanuman or Anjaneya is very engrossing. An Apsara by name Anjana attended to Lord Brahmadev in His abode. Pleased with her services, the Lord asked her if she needed His help in any manner. Anjana then asked Him to deliver her from a curse that was pronounced on her by a sage. On the request of Brahmadev, Anjana narrated her story.

When Anjana was a child, she was playing on earth with her friends. While playing, she saw a monkey meditating like a human sage. Amused at this peculiar sight, she threw some fruits at the monkey, which was actually a sage who was meditating in the form of a monkey. The angry sage then cursed Anjana that she would turn into a monkey as soon as she fell in love. A worried Anjana begged for forgiveness. The sage took pity on her and told her that he could not take back his curse. However, he assured her that the man would continue to love her despite her monkey appearance.

Anjana then requested Lord Brahma to reverse the curse. After pondering over the matter, Lord Brahmadev asked Anjana to go to Earth and find a husband. He further advised that her curse would be reversed if she gives birth to an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

Heeding to Brahmadev’s advice, Anjana took birth on earth and lived as a huntress. One day, she fell in love with a man who was fighting a lion. The curse soon took effect and she turned into a monkey. However, to her astonishment she found that the man, Kesari, also had a monkey-face. After their wedding, Anjana worshipped Lord Shiva who appeared before her and accepted her request to be born as her son. In due course, Anjana gave birth to a monkey-faced child who was named Anjaneya or son of Anjana. The Apsara was thus released from the sage’s curse.
