One day Sage Narada happened to visit Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva, Maa Parvati and their two sons Lord Ganesh and Lord Karthikeya. While Lord Kartikeya rode a swift Peacock, Lord Ganesh rode a mouse. After paying respects to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Sage Narada presented a mango and told Lord Shiva that the mango is sweeter than nectar and the person who eats the mango would become very wise.
Lord Shiva took the mango from Sage Narada’s hand and tried to split it into two and share it with Goddess Parvati. Sage Narada stopped the great Lord telling Him that the mango must not be split among two or more persons and only one person must eat the whole mango. Lord Shiva then handed over the whole fruit to Goddess Parvati who refused to have the whole fruit. Attracted by the aroma of the mango, Lord Kartikeya told Narada that He would like to have the whole fruit. Lord Ganesh also wanted to have the whole fruit as He found it very attractive. In order to pacify the two brothers and justly award the mango, Sage Narada suggested that both Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesh must race across the entire world and whoever wins the race would get the mango. Kartikeya readily agreed as he rode a peacock, which would fly quickly. Thinking that He would win the contest hands down Lord Kartikeya immediately set off on the peacock. Lord Ganesh was perturbed as He rode a mouse that could not match the speed of the peacock. After thinking for a while, Lord Ganesh asked His parents to stand together and circled around them 3 times. Sage Narada declared Lord Ganesh as the winner as the great Lord considered His parents to be His entire world. Lord Kartikeya too accepted the verdict.
