As per Hindu mythological stories, Kubera, the God of wealth, is the neighbor of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati in the Himalayas. He is one of the Lok Palas (protectors) of the world. Lord Kubera boasted about his wealth by regularly organizing large parties. He invited all the Devas to the parties and treated them to sumptuous food. However, he was unsatisfied as Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati did not attend his parties. One day he visited Mount Kailash thinking that his fame would increase if he hosts Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati for a meal. However, Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati refused his invitation and told him that their son, Lord Ganesha, would attend on their behalf as He loves to eat food.
Lord Ganesha agreed immediately and went along with Kubera to his palace to have food. Kubera welcomed Lord Ganesha to his palace and led Him to the dining hall. Lord Ganesha immediately ordered for food saying that He was very hungry. Kubera’s servants brought large quantities of food but Lord Ganesha had everything that they had to offer and asked for more. Very soon Kubera’s kitchen became empty and the servants had nothing to offer Lord Ganesha. This angered the God of wisdom a lot. He then told Kubera that he was still feeling hungry and proceeded to eat the God of wealth himself. A frightened Kubera ran to Mount Kailash and fell at the feet of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati asking for forgiveness. He pleaded that he would never boast about his wealth again. Lord Shiva then gave Lord Kubera a handful of rice and asked him to give the rice to Lord Ganesha. Kubera did as he was told to. Lord Ganesha eat the rice and blessed Kubera who never again boasted about his wealth.
