When Lord Surya Came to the Aid of the Pandavas

Lord Surya is the presiding deity of Sunday (Ravivar). Today let us seek the benevolent Lord’s blessings by recollecting one of His glorious tales.

The Pandavas and their wife Draupadi were exiled to the forests after Yudhishtara, the eldest of the Pandavas, lost a game of dice to Shakuni, the maternal uncle of the Kauravas. A few sages who were very close to the Pandavas decided to accompany them to the forests unable to bear the pangs of separation. Yudhishtara asked the sages to go back to the kingdom as he was unsure about his own family’s welfare in the forest. However, the sages refused to leave the Pandavas saying that it would be honorable for them to accompany the righteous Pandavas during their difficult times. At this difficult juncture, Dhaumya, a close friend of Yudhishtara, asked the exiled king to pray to Lord Surya for help. Yudhishtara immediately agreed and prayed to Lord Surya with utmost devotion. A pleased Lord Surya appeared before the exiled king and gave the Askshaya Patra, which would ensure continuous supply of food. A grateful Yudhishtara accepted the miraculous plate and fed his family and all the rishis with its help throughout the exiled period.
