Maha Gauri Pujan on eighth day of Navratri

The eighth day of Navratra is called Durga Ashtami and it is dedicated to Maa Gauri who is the 8th manifestation of Goddess Durga. Maha Gauri has a very mesmerizing appearance. Her complexion is stark white, beautiful as moon; she has four arms and three eyes. Her lower right hand holds damru and upper left hand holds trishul. Her mount is Bull and she wears white or green color sarree. Her beauty glows like gleam of white Pearl. She is the symbol of peace and endurance.

According to the legend when Goddess Parvati was observing strenuous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband her body turned very dark and dust accumulated on her skin. After several years of onerous penance Lord Shiva got pleased and accepted her as his wife. After that he bathed her with holy water of Ganga River (Gangajal) and found out that her complexion is pearl white and extremely beautiful thus he named her as Gauri which means white.

Chant following mantra to worship Maa Gauri –

श्वेते वृषे समारूढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः |

महागौरी शुभं दद्यान्त्र महादेव प्रमोददा ||

Śvētē vr̥ṣē samārūḍhā śvētāmbaradharā śuciḥ |

mahāgaurī śubhaṁ dadyāntra mahādēva pramōdadā ||
