Story of emergence of Maha Lakshmi Mata

Prosperity, love, fortune and beauty are all synonymous to Maha Lakshmi Mata. She is the consort of Lord Vishnu and her four arms represent the four truths of human life viz. dharma, artha, kama and moksha. Here is the story of emergence of Sri Lakshmi Mata during the churning of Ksheersagar Ocean.

Once upon a time Durvasa the short tempered Rishi gifted a beautiful garland to Indra the King of Devas. The specialty of garland was that the flowers in it would never wilt. Lord Indra gave the garland to his elephant Airavata. When Durvasa learned about this he became very angry for this disrespect. He cursed Indra that he along with other Gods will lose all their powers as they are becoming proud and vain because of the powers they possess. As all Devas became powerless, Demons took advantage of the situation and vanquished the Devas out of the heaven. Worried and homeless Devtas reached Lord Brahma for help. Lord Brahma advised to churn the ocean of milk Ksheersagar to obtain ‘amrut’ the nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu incarnated as Kurma (tortoise) to support Mount Manthara as a churning rod and serpent Vasuki became churning rope. Both Asuras and Devatas churned Ksheersagar together under the supervision of King Bali Chakravarti.

Sri Maa Lakshmi appeared from the ocean as a Divine gift with lotus in her hand. She then chose to become the consort of Lord Vishnu as only he is powerful enough to control Maya. Thus Maha Lakshmi is also known as the daughter of sea and moon is considered her brother as moon also appeared from the ocean during churning. Along with MahaLakshmi and moon, Alakshmi also emerged from the ocean. She is the older sister of Sri Lakshmi and the Goddess of misfortune. When Lakshmi Mata emerged from Ksheersagar she had a choice to be at the side of Devtas or Asuras. She chose Devtas side and since then Mahalakshmi is revered in three worlds as the Goddess of wealth.
