A glorious way of honoring Lord Ganesha all over India, Ganesha Chaturthi is one of the most relevant Hindu festivals, coming down from ages. According to Hindu calendar, this festivity is observed during Bhadrapada month, which is the starting point of Shukla Chaturthi, or the fourth day of the waxing moon. This date approximately falls in between the months of August and September. This festivity is known for its fun-filled environment, well adorned with lights and flowers, all around. It lasts for ten long days, with an ending note on Anant Chaturdashi, or the 14th day of the waxing moon.
This festival involves installation of Ganesha clay images in temporary shrines or public pandals, and the entire puja lasts for ten days. After ten days are over, the idols get immersed in water bodies. Some Hindus ensure to install such clay images of Lord Ganesha at home, as a mark of prosperity and good luck. It is celebrated mainly as a public event and started from the time of King Shivaji, the Maratha King from 1630 to 1680. However, at this present scenario, the public festival is celebrated, as marked by Bhausaheb Laxman Javale, in the year 1892. It took place after installation of first public Ganesha idol in Pune.
Ganesha Chaturthi is stated as one of the grandest festivals, all over India, and elaborately celebrated in Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Moreover, you can see the same grandeur in other Southern and Western parts of India. Just outside India, this festivity takes its shape in Terai region, located in Nepal and by other Hindu diaspora, located in Mauritius, US, and Canada. These are enough to prove that the love and prosperity of Lord Ganesha are not just restricted within Indian boundaries, but has far-reaching effects, on a global front.
Weeks before the D-day, artisans start their hands in making Ganesha Idols in various shapes, postures and heights. From miniature versions for homely environments to larger pandal versions, the options are practically endless. The size might vary from ¾ of an inch to even 70 feet and above. The festival starts to grow its root just after installing the holy idol of Lord Ganesha. The entire podium is well embellished with garlands and lights. Some pandals are well adorned with theme based ideas, for new approach every time. Mantras are chanted by enlightening priests and the message of love and prosperity spreads, globally. These ten days are known for their purity and grand festive mood among Indian people.
