Hanuman Temple, Delhi

The ancient Hanuman Temple is located on the Baba Kharak Singh Road, around 250 meters from Connaught Place, New Delhi. The shrine is one of the five temples in Delhi from the Mahabharata days. The other four temples that date back to the Mahabharata period are the Nili Chatri Mahadev Temple, the Bhairav Temple and the Yogmaya Temple. The temple contains a self-manifested idol of Bala Hanuman. The temple was first constructed by Maharaja Man Singh I during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Raja Jai Singh reconstructed the temple in the year 1724 A.D. Several improvements were since made to the temple.

It is said that the great poet Tulsidas who penned Ramacharitamanas (Tulsi Ramayana) and Hanuman Chalisa offered prayers to Lord Hanuman at this temple. During his visit, the then Mughal Emperor summoned Tulsidas and asked the poet to perform a miracle. Tulsidas performed the said miracle with the grace of Lord Hanuman. The pleased Emperor presented the temple with the finial of a crescent moon. The finial is present on the spire of the shrine even today.

The sanctum sanctorum houses the idol of Bala Hanuman, which faces the Southern direction. Images of Radha and Krishna, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are placed to the right hand side of the idol. While the left hand of the idol holds a mace (gada), the right hand is crossed across the chest depicting adulation to the idols of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. The epic Ramayana is artistically painted on the ceiling of the main hall (mandap). Recently, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation built shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Parvati, Lakshmi Narayan, Durga and Santoshi Mata within the precincts of the temple. The mantra “Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram” is chanted throughout the day in the temple. This event has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Hanuman Temple attracts a large number of devotees, especially during Tuesdays and Saturdays, which are considered to be auspicious for Lord Hanuman. Hanuman Jayanti, which falls on the Purnima day in Chaitra month, is celebrated in a grand manner with special pujas. Colorful processions are also held on Hanuman Jayanti.
