According to the Suta Samhita, it is the Lord Vishnu who himself is said to have bestowed this special knowledge of this homam to the great sage Sanat kumar, who again in turn has instructed the sage Bodhayana about it. When this homam is performed according to the instruction of the Yajurveda Veda, it results in the fruit of begetting children redeeming the couples from all their inherent doshas. This then results in a vibrant and healthy progeny with the blessings of the Narayana.

According to the Ramayana, when King Dasaratha despite having three queens was left childless, the great sage Viasistha recommended him to perform the Putra Kamashti homam. The homam was conducted under the supervision of the sage Rishishringa, the expert in Yajurveda that contains the guidelines for the homam. After the successful completion of the homam, Agnidev appeared to give a bowl of sweets to King Dasaratha to be givento his three queens to beget sons to him.
