Procedure of performing Ganesh homam

The vidhi of the havan is important as the mantras and the janpas that are done in the rituals will ensure that your prayers reach the divine goddess.

  1. Before the starting of the chanting the priests will mark all four sides of the kund or on the earth.
  2. After marking the kund, it will be cleaned with holy water from the kusha. The water in the kusha is the scared ganga jal which purifies the kund and makes it ready for the holy fire to be lit.
  3. The woods that are used for the fire is also important if you want to get the desired results from the ritual. If you are performing Saraswati homa then the fire should be made of the mango woods.

Once the fire is lit the priests will start the chants and sacrifice some of the samagris in the holy fire. All these samagris will ultimately turn into ashes which are known as bhabhut. An arti of the goddess will be done and the bhabhut will be applied on everyone who is a part of the havan after it is completed.

It is said in the scriptures that the yajna’s holy fire connects the native and the goddess. The mantras and the chants are different than those in poojans as in yajnas at the end of each and every mantra the priests chant swaha while sacrificing the samagris. Finally after the chanting ends, priests will break a coconut into halves and fill it with a few specific samagris and offer it to the holy fire. This is considered to be the final offering to please goddess Saraswati and the yajna is ended with a few mantras. After the final offering the native who is performing the homa has to do a Parikarama of the kund.
